Noypitz (West Covina, CA)

It is seldom that we find a great Filipino Restaurant that we really like. However, a couple of months ago while we were on our way to see a show at the Edwards Theater in West Covina, we stumbled upon a newly opened Filipino Restaurant called Noypitz, which looked so interesting.  After several weeks, we finally decided to try this out.  To our surprise, the food is really good and the service is great.  We ordered their Lumpia Shanghai as an appetizer, which was really good.  For anyone who is not familiar with this dish, it happens to be one of the most popular dish served at Filipino parties.  This is definitely a recommended choice of appetizer at Noypitz.  For the main entrees, we ordered their Fried Chicken that is crispy on the outside but so tender on the inside.  We tried one of our favorite dish, the Sizzling Bistek, which is a tender sirloin beef stips cooked in soy sauce and lemon and garnished with onion slices.  We were in seventh heaven at that point.  Just when we thought that it can't get any better than that, we tried the Adobong Sitaw.  This is string beans simmered in soy sauce, vinegar and garlic, mixed with shrimp and pork. This dish was highly pleasing to our palate that it pushed us beyond seventh heaven and out into the culinary galaxy.  And it was in that elevated space of euphoria where we enjoyed their Flan that was so silky smooth and lavishly flavorful, that you can no longer compare the meal at Noypitz with anything else.  The only words to utter at this point is "remarkably good."

Rosa Mexicano (Los Angeles, CA)

Rosa Mexicano is a nice Mexican Restaurant at LA Live in Downtown Los Angeles. This place has a really quaint design that embraces the Mexican culture and purely expresses the authenticity of their cuisine. One of their specialty is the Guacamole that bursts with organic flavor.  You can really taste the freshness of their avocado.  If you happen to love Salsa, you definitely have to try out Rosa Mexicano's version of their Salsa.  It has the right amount of spice and you will surely love every bite when you dip your chips in their Salsa.  Of course, experiencing an APpventure at a new restaurant won't be complete without tasting their drink selections.  Their Mexican Colada and the Dos Agaves Barrel-Aged Cocktail wins the vote at $15 and $16 respectively. Their salad dishes and fish plates are also very good.  However, compared to other similar restaurants, Rosa Mexicano is on the pricey side.  It can easily be compared to El Cholo and their food are pretty similar.  Price-wise, you can stretch your budget a little more at El Cholo. Rosa Mexicano is still worth trying at least once.

Wood Ranch BBQ & Grill is a nice American Restaurant located at the Northridge Mall.  This restaurant features authentic and modern American food bursting with flavor that will surely enhance your appreciation for some good BBQ-flavored meat.  We started our dinner with an order of the Killer Chicken Wings dipped in Wood Ranch's Fiery sauce.  The chicken wings remained crispy and contained the richness of its flavor even though it was smothered with their Fiery sauce.  After we have consumed the chicken wings, we were struck with a sudden feeling of astonishment and delight when we tasted their full slab of Baby Back Ribs.  It has the perfect balance between savory and sweetness and the perfect amount of heat that made the meat fall off the bone while you are pleasantly enjoying every bite.  There are so many other things that one can truly enjoy from their menu.  We highly recommend Wood Ranch BBQ & Grill not only because of their great tasting food but also the great service that their servers provide.  They were quite attentive and pays close attention to your specifications on how you want your food prepared.  We definitely will be visiting them again soon.

Anyone who wishes to be wowed or greatly impressed needs to see the newly renovated Castaway in Burbank. This restaurant has been around for decades but recently went through a $10 million facelift and has reopened their doors in early May 2018. Today, Castaway boasts of their contemporary restaurant design with breathtaking view matched with an upscale vibe and an excellent feel of Californian cuisine. We started our APpventure at the bar while waiting for our table. While sitting at the bar we decided to try the charcuterie where you can choose up to 7 different cheeses and artisanal meats.

We were surprised to see the great presentation of delectable meats and cheeses but what wowed us even more is the flavor of the food. This by far is one of the best charcuterie tray we've had.
When we finally moved to our dining table with a huge window looking out into the valley, we started to sample out their Kale Caesar Salad, Zabuton Steak, Salmon, Chicken, Grilled Broccoli, Brussel Sprouts, Fries, and of course, some desserts. The food at Castaway is amazingly good and the service is outstanding. I would highly recommend that you try this restaurant   but make sure to make your reservations first. This has now become a very popular spot and a valley treasure.

Tatang (North Hollywood, CA)

While searching for a Filipino food near Burbank, CA, I stumbled upon this tiny place called Tatang that struck my attention due to its trending reviews on Yelp. I decided to drive over with a coworker to Tatang to try out and see what the place and the food looks like. Out of curiosity,  and a craving for Filipino food, we ordered the Pork Sinigang, Bistek and the Petaluma Chicken Sisig. I must say that I am pretty impressed with the way they presented their Bistek dish. They piled up the onion strings on top of the beef thus making a nice tower that is so appetizing. The Bistek is amazingly good and the meat is very tender.

The Petaluma Chicken Sisig was also pretty good. Although I am more familiar with Pork Sisig, Tatang's Petaluma Chicken Sisig isn't bad at all. I am, however, unimpressed with their Pork Sinigang because it lacks flavor. Pork Sinigang is a popular Filipino dish characterized by its sour and savoury taste most often associated with tamarind. It seems their tamarind soup base was watered down too much thereby losing the sour taste. I wouldn't give up on Tatang just yet, but maybe next time, I will ask them to add more tamarind soup base to make their Pork Sinigang more flavorful.
